In this demonstration, I am going to create a Cisco 7200 router. This technology is being deprecated as it uses the old MIPS emulation. However, its still worth taking a look at. I updated these notes in September 2024 due to permissions problems.
First, go to the module pages on Blackboard and download the image for the 7200 router. If you are using GNS3 in a VM, you need to use WinSCP or similar to copy the image up to your download folder in Ubuntu.
Open GNS3 and create a new project called CiscoIOS
Select Routers and then New Template.
Install from the GNS3 server, click Next.
Select Routers and then Cisco 7200. If the option is not there, then click Update from online registry. Then click Install.
Install the appliance on the local computer. Click Next.
If you get a message that there are no installation instructions available, click Next.
Now we get a missing files message, as GNS3 cannot find the exact version with the correct checksum. Click to allow custom files. Select the version shown and click to Create a new version.
Give it a unique name then click OK.
My filename is the name proposed, but .bin not .image.
I click OK and it tells me it is ready to install. I select it and click Next.
After clicking to confirm, I have the router!
I drag it to the project to make sure it works. When you complete this, power it up and see if you can get to the termainl.
