Communicating OSPF
OSPF sends its messages in IP as IP protocol 89. That’s an IP protocol, not UDP or TCP. Link State Advertisements are the payload carried by these message types. There are several message types;
Hello messages for discovery sent as multicast to 224.0.0.5
Database description (DD) messages are used to send LSA headers
Link State Requests (LSRs) are used to request information on an LSA
Link State Updates (LSUs) are the normal response to a LSR
Link State Acknowledgements (LSAck) confirm reception of an LSU
