Introduction

This collection of notes has its origin in undergraduate teaching from 2011, and was heavily augmented for post-graduate teaching in 2015.

This version is intended to introduce a post-graduate student to networking practices, in this case specifically relating to routing and layer 3. I intend to provide the student with a solid grounding in requirements and practices from a theoretical perspective.

It is expected that you have already understood my notes on

  • LAN Networking Practice

  • Ethernet Practice

In these documents, there are several key terms. These will be italicized. You may need to look up these terms to get a full understanding of them.

Commands are generally shown in bold.

Where I use powers, I show then using the caret symbol, e.g. 2^4 = 16.
