Extensions

Files often have a dot in their name, this has a different significance in Windows or Unix.

This is important to the operating system in DOS/Windows, but it is off less significance in Unix, it is not structural. For example, I will call a file project.conf to denote a configuration file for a project. When I back it up, I might call it project.12SEP24 to note that backup date. But none of these extensions have meaning for the operating system.
